Willcom Launches World’s First PHS 3G Dual-Mode Handset
CA091113-02
Willcom and Willcom Okinawa, two Japanese PHS operators, announced plans to commercialize the HYBRID W-ZERO3, a handset that supports both PHS and W-CDMA networks, reported Yahoo! Japan in November 2009.
The HYBRID W-ZERO3, which will be released in January 2010, runs Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional Japanese edition. The phone supports maximum 7.2Mbps downlink throughput and maximum 5.7Mbps uplink throughput.
The phone is compatible with IEEE802.11b/g wireless LAN, IrDA, and Bluetooth 2.0. The main display features a 3.5-inch full WVGA touchscreen LCD. The slide-out keyboard has a designated key that gives access to Windows Live. The phone houses a 5-megapixel CMOS camera that features handshake compensation, autofocus, and something called the PDF SHOT function, which converts content written on whiteboards (such conference minutes) into PDF files.
The HYBRID W-ZERO3 is supplied by Sharp. It measures 53 x 120 x 16.9 mm and weighs 158 grams. The CPU is a 528MHz MSM7200A ARM1 from Qualcomm. The phone is available in color variations of black and gold.
In January 2010, Willcom will also begin offering a W-SIM type GSM module, the CM-G100, as a third-party option. Users can combine the CM-G100 with a SIM card, which can be used abroad, allowing them to use their GSM service while traveling. [M. Robertson, Portelligent]
